Give each box a purpose
Ask which existing product belongs to the packaging and when it is likely to be needed again. A fitted insert for delicate equipment may help with a planned move. An arbitrary small box without an associated object is usually only a possible idea.
Label retained packaging with the product name. Do not hide accessories or papers inside if the box may later be discarded. Instructions and important purchase records need their own findable place. Packaging should not be the only reminder that those records exist.
Distinguish returns from protection
Returns, statutory rights and voluntary manufacturer guarantees can involve different conditions. Original packaging is not universally required by law in every situation. For a particular question, check current consumer information and applicable terms rather than indefinitely keeping every box out of uncertainty.
Separately, suitable packaging can make later shipping easier. That is a practical benefit, not automatically a legal requirement. Consider how likely shipping or moving is and whether another suitable package could be obtained. Retention may make more sense for unusually shaped or delicate objects than for readily replaceable standard cartons.
Reduce volume where appropriate
Foldable cartons may be stored flat if this does not undermine their future purpose. Moulded supports and special inserts still need their space. Keep matching components clearly associated so that only the outer box does not survive.
Store packaging dry and leave access routes and services clear. Tall unstable stacks are not a useful way to fill a recess. A defined storage area makes it apparent when another decision is needed.
Review unresolved cases
For uncertain boxes, add a review date, perhaps after a specific anticipated use. This is a household organisation aid, not a statement about legal time limits. If the associated object has gone, the original reason for its packaging usually disappears too.
Dispose of materials according to local arrangements after removing personal information and needed parts. A manageable selection of justified packaging is easier to use than a store of boxes whose contents and purpose nobody remembers.
